Chicago Public Schools announce their plan to combat violence in public schools, by identifying the most at-risk students and connecting them with full-time mentors and part-time jobs.  Chicago Public Schools are taking the lead in addressing the problem and launching a $30 million project to curb teen violence in city neighborhoods.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
