    Now in its 20th year, Project Cool for Back-to-School provides 1,700 homeless youth with school supplies each fall. Through its volunteers, community support and in-kind donations, Project Cool is also able to help with shoes, clothing and hygiene kits to make students comfortable and confident on the first day of class. Project Cool gives students whose young lives have been disrupted by homelessness a jumpstart on their first day of school. Each child and teen receives a new backpack filled with age appropriate school supplies, along with a gift certificate for new shoes.

    On Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. all of Viacom's U.S. television properties will join together to simultaneously air Get Schooled: You Have the Right, a 30-minute special that highlights education challenges and breakthroughs experienced by three leading figures from the world of entertainment, sports and politics; along with the stories of three of their most trusted professional colleagues. This is the first programming "roadblock" of any kind across all Viacom networks, more than 20 channels including BET, MTV, VH1, CMT, COMEDY CENTRAL, Spike TV and Nickelodeon.

    In southwest Washington, 26 hair salons and barbers are offering a total of 600 free back-to-school haircuts to low-income families.  Vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Thursday, August 14 and will be good through Thursday, September 11.  Click on the link below for more information about eligibility or call Mandy Henderson at the Lower Columbia Community Action Center at 1-800-383-2101, ext 283.
